A medicated antifungal shampoo such as ketoconazole 2% or ciclopirox (Loprox) 1% may be prescribed by your doctor to treat and prevent dandruff, which is also known as seborrhoeic dermatitis of the scalp. Additionally, ciclopirox with a.77% concentration may be administered as a gel or foam.
A doctor may recommend a corticosteroid treatment, such as clobetasol shampoo, for a brief period of time in certain dandruff situations. Note that this information is meant merely as a general guide. In order to decide which (if any) dandruff treatments are medically necessary, your physician will go over your symptoms and medical history.
Many OTC dry scalp treatments contain active ingredients that can help control mild dandruff.
• Coal tar (Neutrogena T-Gel)
• Ketoconazole 1% (Nizoral)
• Selenium sulfide (Selsun Blue, Selsun Blue Medicated, Head & Shoulders Clinical Strength)
• Sulfur (Sulfur8 Medicated)
• Zinc pyrithione (Head & Shoulders, Zincon)
Dandruff is brought on, among other things, by the activity of the sebaceous glands and opportunistic fungi such as Malassezia. The scalp, face, and upper torso are common places for these fungi to settle since these skin regions produce a lot of oil, or sebum. Shampoos that fight hair loss, such as Nizoral, function by stopping the growth of these fungi. Although dandruff cannot be cured, it may be effectively managed, and during the warmer months, its symptoms usually subside.
